DISCOVER: World AIDS Day

The theme for World AIDS Day 2007 and 2008 is Leadership. This theme will continue to be promoted with the campaigning slogan, "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise."

Leadership was selected as the theme for World AIDS Day to encourage leaders at all levels to stop AIDS. Building on the 2006 theme of Accountability, Leadership highlights the discrepancy between the commitments that have been made to halt the spread of AIDS, and actions taken to follow them through. The theme empowers everyone from individuals to organizations to governments to lead in the response to AIDS.

LEAD - EMPOWER - DELIVER

About the Day
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic.

The Facts
In 2007, the estimated number of persons living with HIV worldwide was 33.2 million with an additional 2.7 million people newly infected.

A large red ribbon hangs between columns in the north portico of the White House for World AIDS Day, November 30, 2007.
